Community composition and species richness of parasitoids infesting Yponomeuta species in the Netherlands Naturalis
Cleary, Daniel F.R..
Parasitoid assemblages infesting Yponomeuta species in the Netherlands were investigated. Parasitoid species richness and community composition were related to host species, habitat, temporal and spatial variation. Both community structure and species richness did not differ among habitats. There was no significant difference in species richness between years (1994 and 1995) but there was a significant difference in community composition. Community composition and species richness both differed among host species, although this latter result was solely due to the host species Y. evonymellus. There was no significant relationship between community similarity and distance. These results indicate that the parasitoids of the moth genus Yponomeuta in the...

Determinants of World Demand for U.S. Corn Seeds: The Role of Trade Costs AgEcon
Jayasinghe, Sampath; Beghin, John C.; Moschini, GianCarlo.
The United States is a large net exporter of corn seeds. Seed trade, including that of corn, has been expanding, but its determinants are not well understood. This paper econometrically investigates the determinants of world demand for U.S. corn seeds with a detailed analysis of trade costs impeding export flows to various markets, including costs associated with distance, tariffs, and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) regulations. The analysis relies on a gravity-like model based on an explicit specification of derived demand for seed by foreign corn producers, estimated based on data from 48 countries and for the years 1989 to 2004. An SPS count variable is incorporated as a shifter in the unit cost of seeds faced by foreign users. A sample selection...

Investigating Distance Effects on Environmental Values: A Choice Modelling Approach AgEcon
Concu, Giovanni B..
This paper describes a Choice Modelling experiment set up to investigate the relationship between distance and willingness to pay for environmental quality changes. The issue is important for the estimation and transfer of benefits. The Choice Modelling experiment allows testing distance effects on parameters of environmental attributes that imply different trade-offs between use and non-use values. The sampling procedure is designed to provide a "geographically balanced" sample. Several specifications of the distance covariate are compared and distance effects are shown to take complex shapes. Welfare analysis shows that disregarding distance produces under-estimation of individual and aggregated benefits and losses, seriously hindering the reliability of...

Market-Creating Effect of the Internet on Food Trade AgEcon
Bojnec, Stefan; Ferto, Imre.
This paper analyses the impact of the number of the Internet users on food industry trade between developed OECD countries using both panel and cross-sectional data. We find the positive, significant and over time increasing effect of the Internet on food industry exports confirming that the Internet reduces market-specific entry costs for food industry exports. The significant positive effect pertained to the Internet is found in the importing countries. The significant positive effects on food industry exports are found for the country’s economic size and bilateral common features and proximities. The Internet mitigates the countries proximities, but increased the distance between the countries.

Technological Changes in the Transportation Sector--Effects on U.S. Food and Agricultural Trade: A Proceedings AgEcon
ERS sponsored a workshop, Technological and Structural Change in the Transportation Sector: Effects on U.S. Food and Agricultural Trade, March 17-18, 1999, in Washington, DC. The program's objectives were to raise awareness within ERS about the role and importance of transportation in U.S. food and agricultural trade and to discuss the need of an agency research agenda in this area. More than 60 people attended. Bob Thompson of the World Bank and Jeffrey Frankel of the Brookings Institution led with discussions about the role of transportation in the global food system and the importance of integrating geography and transportation in analysis of international trade. Other panels dealt with transportation technology, past and future, the changing policy...

What is Local and for What Foods Does it Matter? AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Batte, Marvin T.; Woods, Timothy A.; Ernst, Stanley C..
Consumer demand for local foods has been increasing dramatically over the past several years. Many food producers and marketers are raising their capacity to incorporate local food. Revenue from local Farmers’ Market and Community Supported Agriculture has become a greater source of income particularly for small and medium-sized farms. This study answers two important questions related to local food that have not been sufficiently addressed before: what is the greatest distance food can travel and still be accepted by consumers as local and is "local" equally important across food categories. Using survey data from two states in the USA, this research found that consumers’ accepted food travel distance may be much shorter than what is generally...
